چکیده

The Portals 3.3 data movement interface was developed at Sandia National Laboratories in collaboration with the University of New Mexico over the last ten years. Portals is intended to provide the functionality necessary to scale a distributed memory parallel computing system to thousands of nodes. Previous versions of Portals ran on several large-scale machines, including a 1024-node nCUBE-2, a 1800-node Intel Paragon, and the 4500-node Intel ASCI Red machine. The latest version of Portals is the lowestlevel network transport layer on the Sandia/Cray Red Storm platform. In this paper, we describe how Portals are implemented for Red Storm and discuss many of the important features and benefits that Portals provide for supporting various services in the Red Storm environment.

Cray XT4 and Seastar 3-D Torus Interconnect

The physical sciences are increasingly turning toward computational techniques as an alternative to the traditional “wet lab” or destructive testing environments for experimentation. In particular, computational sciences can be used to scale far beyond that of traditional experimental methodologies; opening the door to large-scale climatology and molecular dynamics, for example, which encompass...

The Red Storm Architecture and Early Experiences with Multi-Core Processors

The Red Storm architecture, which was conceived by Sandia National Laboratories and implemented by Cray, Inc., has become the basis for most successful line of commercial supercomputers in history. The success of the Red Storm architecture is due largely to the ability to effectively and efficiently solve a wide range of science and engineering problems. The Cray XT series of machines that embo...

An Evaluation of the Impacts of Network Bandwidth and Dual-Core Processors on Scalability

A portion of the Cray Red Storm system at Sandia National Laboratories recently completed an upgrade of the processor and network hardware. Single-core 2.0 GHz AMD Opteron processors were replaced with dual-core 2.4 GHz AMD Opterons, while the network interface hardware was upgraded from a sustained rate of 1.1 GB/s to 2.0 GB/s (without changing the router link rates). These changes more than d...

Implementation of Open MPI on Red Storm

The Open MPI project provides a high quality MPI implementation available on a wide variety of platforms. This technical report describes the porting of Open MPI to the Cray Red Storm platform (as well as the Cray XT3 platform). While alpha quality, the port already provides acceptable performance. Remaining porting work and future enhancements are also discussed.

Red Storm Systems Management: Topics on Extending Current Capabilities

Systems like the Red Storm system at Sandia Laboratories provide grand challenges for developers of systems software. While many of the challenges associated with systems like Red Storm are experienced on other systems, like commodity clusters, the sheer magnitude of the system magnifies issues that may seem trivial on less complex systems. The value of taking an integrated approach to many of ...
